Iron Ores : Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in color from dark grey, bright yellow, or deep purple to rusty red. The iron itself is usually found in the form of magnetite (Fe. 3O. 4, 72.4% Fe), hematite (Fe.Earth’s most important iron ore deposits are found in sedimentary rocks. They formed from chemical reactions that combined iron and oxygen in marine and fresh waters. The two most important minerals in these deposits are iron oxides: hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4).

They typically contain 67%-72% Fe and various additional material adjusting the chemical composition and the metallurgic properties of the pellets.To make steel, iron ore is first mined from the ground. It is then smelted in blast furnaces where the impurities are removed and carbon is added. In fact, a very simple definition of steel is “iron alloyed with carbon, usually less than 1%.”Currently magnetite iron ore is mined in Minnesota and Michigan in the U.S., Eastern Canada and Northern Sweden. Magnetite bearing banded iron formation is currently mined extensively in Brazil, which exports significant quantities to Asia, and there is a nascent and large magnetite iron-ore industry in Australia.At present, over 99 per cent of India’s iron ore is produced by just five states of Karnataka, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Goa and Jharkhand. Karnataka is the largest producer and accounts for nearly one-fourth of the total iron ore produced in India.
